Origins

Meals on Wheels was launched by Senior Citizens, Inc. fifty years ago. At that time, we served a handful of clients. Today our Meals on Wheels program is the region’s leading provider, serving over 2,400 home-delivered and group-setting meals daily.

Dedication

Every Monday through Friday, our thoroughly- trained and highly-talented staff gathers in our kitchen facility to prepare hot, nutritious meals that are distributed throughout Chatham, Bryan, Glynn, Effingham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties. Each meal is prepared according to menus designed by a certified nutritionist that guarantees variety, flavor, and quality. In fact, each of our meals exceeds the federal guidelines for one-third of a typical senior’s daily nutritional needs.

Twelve Thousand Meals a Week!

How many seniors are served by Meals on Wheels? More than 2,400 meals are currently being prepared each day. Each of these meals is vacuum-packed and delivered hot to each recipient. A home-delivered meal also includes refrigerated items – like milk or pudding – as well as fresh bread and, often, fresh fruit.

Staying in Touch

More than 125 volunteers, as well as Senior Citizens, Inc. staff, deliver meals. These dedicated volunteers are actually another, often overlooked, benefit of Meals on Wheels – a daily point of human contact. This brief, but meaningful, visit helps ensure the recipient is eating properly, living in safe and well-maintained surroundings, and receiving any additional care he or she may need. Not only do lasting bonds often develop between volunteers and meal recipients, on many occasions, our volunteers have been credited with reporting serious injury, home fires, or other situations that have put the senior in immediate danger.

More About Senior Citizens, Inc.  (from their website)

Recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award and recognized by the Georgia Legislature as a Center of Excellence and a model program for seniors in the state, Senior Citizens, Inc. is the region’s largest non-profit agency dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all senior citizens. Helping people age successfully has been the mission and the model for Senior Citizens, Inc. for 50 years.

Humble Beginnings

It all started in 1959, when founder Harley C. Morrison noticed that many seniors in his own neighborhood could no longer prepare meals for themselves and recognized the negative affect that this had on their general health. Morrison gathered a group of friends to help him make sack lunches and then delivered those meals to 13 homebound seniors. It did not take long for Morrison to realize that the need for meals and other support services to assist with the challenge of aging extended much past his own neighborhood. In fact, the need was becoming increasingly evident throughout the city and county.

Out of those humble beginnings, Morrison’s vision grew into an agency that now serves more than 20,000 seniors each year and offers a wide variety of programs including:

• Meals on Wheels

• Transportation

• In-Home Support (e.g. housekeepers, personal grooming, etc.)

• Senior Companions Program

• Ruth F. Byck Adult Day Care Center

• Senior Activity Centers

• The Learning Center

• Family Advocates

Over the years, Senior Citizens, Inc. has grown from a small neighborhood effort into a non-profit organization that serves thousands throughout a seven-county area.
